A Humbling Thought...Happy Thanksgiving

There are so many things that come to mind when we think of Thanksgiving. Of course, there is turkey and all the trimmings. Since I am of Italian heritage, there has to be pasta. Can't forget all those delicious pies for dessert. Even after all the feasting, there is always room for those.

And, how amazing does the house smell with all the cooking? Hungry yet?

Football has certainly become a Turkey Day tradition. Watching “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” the night before is growing in popularity too. Though these all conjure images of a "Rockwellian" scene, there is certainly more to the holiday. There is the gathering of friends and family. Remembrances of those no longer seated at our table. Good conversation. Laughter. Love.

Thanksgiving is humbling to me.

Thanksgiving is a time to pause and reflect on not what we have, not our possessions, but what we are and where we are. It's about the road we have traveled and the path that lies ahead. It's celebrating successes and acknowledging defeats. It's a time to acknowledge those who have helped us over the years. They may be in the chair across from us or they may be someone whose path and ours only briefly crossed. More than anything, Thanksgiving is humbling. Humbling because we acknowledge that, individually, we can only accomplish so much.

It's a time to realize we need each other.

We need others to help us. We need their support and encouragement. We need them to hold our hand or, at times, kick us in the seat of our pants. We need their tutelage and inspiration. We need them to champion our causes and soften our defeats.

We need them to assure us we're right and to let us know when we're wrong. We need them to laugh with and to cry with. We need them to keep us focused and to pick us up when we fall. We need them to talk to, endlessly into the night, and to sit silently by our side.

We need to be all these things in return, too.

We need to be each others' hero and friend. Confidant and coach. Cheerleader and fan.

We need to be everything required of us.
We need to be everything.
We need to be.
We need.

For all these things I need and need to be, I am eternally thankful.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday.
